Martian gully activity and the gully sediment transport system

چکیده
The formation process for Martian gullies is a critical unknown understanding recent climate conditions. Leading hypotheses include by snowmelt in past climate, or via currently active CO2 frost processes. This paper presents an expanded catalog of >300 flows gullies. results indicate that sediment transport current gully moves the full range materials needed formation. New are more likely to boulders have pre-existing boulder-covered aprons, indicating transporting same required overall. distribution activity frequencies can be described power law and indicates recurrence intervals individual commonly tens hundreds Mars years. Over last ~300 kyr, variations been modest but had thousands flow events. could sufficient account entirety some cases, although processes occurred further past. For any may initiated under higher-obliquity conditions, this level observable morphology has shaped CO2-driven flows. These observations tempo consistent with entirely processes, spatial temporal variability, no role liquid water.

Numerical modeling of Martian gully sediment transport: Testing the fluvial hypothesis
[1] Using a stereo pair of HiRISE images of a pole‐facing crater slope at 38°S, 218°E, we measure topographic profiles along nine gullies. Typical slopes of the interior channel region (above the depositional apron) are ∼20°. We test the hypothesis that sediment transport on gully slopes occurs via fluvial transport processes by developing a numerical sediment transport model based on steep flu...
متن کاملGully Formation on Mars and Earth: the Transition from Glacial Activity to Gully Depositional Phases
Introduction: The discovery of gullies on Mars [1,2] resulted in a wide variety of proposed candidate mechanisms for formation but ensuing analyses have shown very strong latitude and orientation dependencies on their distributions [3-6]. These constraints have been interpreted to require: 1) a volatile on or near the surface as a source of liquid water, and 2) insolation and slope orientation ...
متن کاملGully Erosion after Wildfire
Predicting runoff and erosion from watersheds burned by wildfires requires an understanding of the spatial structure of both hillslope and channel drainage networks. We investigate the small-scale and large-scale structures of drainage networks using field studies and computer analysis of 30-m digital elevation model. Topologic variables were derived from a composite 30-m DEM, which included 14...

The Gully Erosion Effect On the Environment
The paper contains data about the destructive effects of gully erosion on the environment. It provides general information about the gully erosion in several countries around the world including Romania and is considered a case study for a river basin located in the Semenic Mountains (Bârzava drainage area). The case study is based on the following assumptions: the presence of different types o...
